- How I Decided Digital Marketing Was My Next Career Journey. Why I changed my career at 27 Years Old, and how accessible change is when you use the correct Sources around you.
- What courses and additional education have I taken, and where do I find the supportive information and knowledge to help me become a digital marketer?
- What are the fundamentals of setting myself up for success, and what are the key steps to help you become most prepared for securing your dream job?
Changing Career:
For the past 10 years, I had a career as a professional dancer. I owned a dance company and co-run a dance school in Devon with my mother, Marina. As somebody who constantly felt the pull for freedom and travelling, dancing became a hurdle, and I started to drift from that path. However, I could never take the leap to leave as it was all I had ever known since the age of 2, but my body had different plans and made my career change a much quicker transition.
In Christmas 2021, my health took a drastic turn. Dealing with a narrowing spine, I faced a herniated disc, leading to nine months of agonizing pain while waiting for spinal surgery. My condition worsened, leaving me partially paralyzed at a ninety-degree angle from the waist. After learning the NHS waitlist would take two years, I opted for private surgery upon the recommendation of a shocked private doctor who diagnosed me with 'Cauda Equina Syndrome.' Urgent surgery through the NHS was arranged by this remarkable doctor, and within seven hours of the operation, I walked out of the hospital standing tall.
After this event, I knew I needed to change my life and try as many new things as possible. As an individual who loves to share my 'Vanlife' travel journey online, digital marketing is a fitting new career with lots of opportunities to work on the road and experience a career that is softer on my body.
Education and Courses:
Starting a new career as an adult can be scary and very expensive, so here are 4 steps for how I have managed to consume my knowledge of digital marketing entirely for free.
- Search for Government-granted courses online. This is where I came across 'The Skills Network', a fantastic online programme with flexible live learning lessons and flexibility in coursework and assignments. Due to being a novice In this field, I opted to do the entry-level 2 course and, once completed, moved on to level 3. However, depending on your previous knowledge, you can join whatever level you feel best suits you. This is just one school, however, there are many out there to choose from.
- Hubspot Academy: They offer hours of excellent courses for free, including some that are certificated and can be shared on places like LinkedIn to show authenticity to your continual learning. Even though HubSpot courses are free, their content is always full of the latest information and learning material. In fact, this is often the place I go back to repeatedly to refresh myself on the skills I have learned.
- Google Digital Garage- Skillshop: Once again, another great source of knowledge is offered in the form of short courses. I would highly recommend "Fundamentals of Digital Marketing" for anyone just entering into the realm of Digital marketing. It is free and has no time limitations on completion.
- YouTube: As we all know, YouTube has a plethora of information, from baking cakes to changing a light fixture, but it's also an amazing tool for expanding your intellect on digital marketing. There are so many excellent accounts with fantastic content presented in many ways, so there is a channel for everyone (I personally like very visual content). Here are a couple of channels I enjoy and very useful and knowledgeable:

Setting Up For Success:
The very first piece of advice I was given when starting my journey to becoming a digital marketer was to create a 'Digital Portfolio'. A digital marketing portfolio serves as a visual testament to expertise in areas like SEO, social media, and content creation. It showcases successful campaigns and measurable results, building credibility with clients or employers. This curated showcase not only sets you apart in job applications but also strengthens your personal brand. Regular updates encourage ongoing skill development, ensuring a competitive edge in your field.
LinkedIn has got a ton of perks! You can connect with fellow marketers, potential clients, and other individuals in the industry. Your profile is your professional brag board, showing off your digital marketing skills and wins. Plus, it's a sweet spot for job hunting, and you can learn heaps from industry groups and influencers. With recommendations backing you up, LinkedIn becomes your go-to for levelling up your career and growing your business. It's basically a must-have tool for any digital marketer!
Getting comfortable and confident with 'Marketing and Analytic Software' is going to be the game-changer for your digital marketing future. It is so beneficial to make your work faster and slicker. Plus, these tools provide awesome insights, so you can make smarter choices based on real data. When you nail these tools, you can personalize campaigns, target specific crowds, and stand out in a tech-heavy field.
